Elden Ring Nightreign — Complete Beginner's Guide

Nightreign introduces eight starting classes, each tailored to different playstyles. If you are brand new to Soulslike games, the Vanguard and Duskwalker are the most forgiving picks. Vanguard starts with a sturdy greatshield and respectable vigor, giving you room to learn boss patterns without dying in two hits. Duskwalker leans into medium-range combat with a swift glaive and innate lifesteal that rewards aggression.

Pro Tip:Don't overthink your starting class — you can respec your character after defeating the second major boss. The class only determines your opening stats and equipment.

  • Twilight Lantern — reveals hidden paths in the Shrouded Ruins. Found in a chest on the first floor of the Wayward Chapel.
  • Crimson Seed Talisman — boosts your flask healing by 20%. Dropped by the wandering merchant near Stormhaven Bridge.
  • Roundtable Medallion — grants access to the Nightreign co-op hub. Given by the NPC Fia at the first Site of Grace.
  • Ashes of Echoing Wolves — powerful early-game spirit summon that staggers enemies reliably.

Combat in Nightreign is deliberate — every swing has recovery frames and every dodge has i-frames you need to learn. The single most important skill is learning to roll on reaction rather than on panic. Watch the enemy's arm, not their weapon. When you see the attack wind-up begin, wait a beat, then dodge toward the strike. This will place you behind most enemies and open a punish window.

Warning:Avoid leveling every stat evenly. This is the most common new-player trap. Pick one damage stat (Strength, Dexterity, Intelligence, or Faith) and focus it alongside Vigor. You need at least 40 Vigor before endgame to survive most boss attacks.

The open world in Nightreign is divided into five major regions, each gated by a recommended level. Unlike the original Elden Ring, Nightreign features a dynamic day-night cycle that fundamentally changes enemy placement and spawns. Exploring at night is significantly more dangerous but rewards you with double rune drops and exclusive crafting materials that only appear under moonlight.

Nightreign's marquee feature is seamless three-player co-op. Once you obtain the Roundtable Medallion, you can summon allies at any Site of Grace. The game scales enemy health by 50% per additional player, so communication and role distribution matter. Designate one player as the tank (high poise, greatshield), one as DPS, and one as support running healing incantations.

Pro Tip:Use the quick-chat emotes (mapped to the D-pad) to coordinate during boss fights. 'Wait' and 'Rally' are especially useful when voice chat isn't available.
